What does the Bible say about Loneliness?

Loneliness: A Biblical Guide For Deliverance

Do you know you can be in a room full of people and still feel lonely? You don’t have to be alone to feel lonely. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines being lonely in the following way: “ being without company, cut off from others,  sad from being alone, producing a feeling of bleakness or desolation” (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/loneliness)

If this is you, my fellow Christians, my prayer is that you will be comforted by the love of Jesus and the genuine presence of the Holy Spirit, who indwells every born-again believer and follower of Jesus Christ. It is very comforting not only to know that fact but also to experience the genuine presence of the Holy Spirit in my life daily. It is reassuring to know that whatever crisis or dilemma I may be going through, I am confident that Triune God (God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit) is by my side, comforting and guiding me through it. Praise God!

But what does the Bible say about loneliness? The Holy Scriptures provide an enriching perspective on this human emotion, demonstrating God’s profound love and understanding for His children.

The Bible, God’s word, conveys a clear message that we are never truly alone. In times of isolation and loneliness, or when we feel misunderstood and disconnected, our trust in the unconditional love of God and our faith in Jesus can anchor us.

Did Jesus Ever Experience Loneliness?

Jesus, too, experienced loneliness during His time on Earth, fortifying the connection between human experiences and divine understanding. His life, as recounted in the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John), communicates to us that even in our solitude, God is ever-present.

  1. Jesus in The Garden of Gethsemane: When Jesus faced his impending crucifixion – arguably the loneliest moment of His earthly life, He turned to prayer and communion with God. Let us take His example and turn to prayer and communion with God always, and in this case, when dealing with loneliness.
  1. Jesus on the Cross: Christ’s utterance, the Bible says in Matthew 27:46 NLT, “At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” reflects the depth of His loneliness yet reaffirms the essence of the human-divine relationship in moments of ultimate despair.

Understanding Jesus’s perspective on loneliness can provide a deep sense of solace during our loneliness, reminding us that we are never truly alone.

Strategies for Your Deliverance from Loneliness

1. Read The Bible: When dealing with loneliness, turning to the Bible can provide comfort, guidance, reassurance, and a reminder of God’s enduring love.

Here are some Bible verses that may offer solace in times of loneliness:

  • Psalm 27:10 NLT: “Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close.”
  • Matthew 28:20 NLT, Jesus said: “… I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
  • Isaiah 41:10 NLT, “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.
  • Deuteronomy 31:8 NLT, “Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”
  • Joshua 1:9 NLT, “This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

2. Have Complete Faith in God: The only one that can do the impossible, so surely He can deliver you from loneliness. Remember, when you start to feel lonely, immediately place your thoughts and mind on God, your deliverer.

Job’s Loneliness (Read the Book Of Job): Through Job’s profound suffering and isolation, we understand that faith can provide solace and companionship.

3. Prayers to Combat Loneliness: Whether it’s the Lord’s prayer or your own prayer, expressing our feelings to God through prayer can alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness.

4. Connect With A Christian Faith-Based Community: It is so essential for us as Christians to gather together, communicate, fellowship, and help and support one another”. Hebrews 10:25 NLT says, “ And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.” The Bible  also says in Galatians 6:2 NLT, “Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.” So, if you haven’t done so already, I encourage you to connect with a Christ-centered, Bible-believing, teaching church. Also, feel free to communicate with me. Leave your contact information and submit a message (on the Contact Me section of this website) to me and say “hello.”  I’d love to hear from you. Let’s talk!

So, in conclusion, it is essential to remember that while loneliness may occur in your life, God is always present and promises to be with you. Trusting in His love, taking Jesus’ example when He felt lonely ( remember: He turned to prayer and communion with God), relying on His promises as you read the Bible, having complete faith in God, praying for your help and deliverance from loneliness, and connecting with a Christian faith-based community for support and encouragement (which can also provide a sense of belonging) are all strategies that can help to alleviate feelings of loneliness.

These Bible verses I mentioned above are just a starting point. There are many more Bible passages that address loneliness and provide comfort. Further reading and reflection on these verses can deepen your understanding and provide additional insight.
